2010-2011 School Year

Northern High School's
Mission Statement
In collaboration with its community, NHS aims to foster an atmosphere that cultivates a desire for life-long learning. We strive to promote tolerance and respect for diversity, while providing our students with the opportunity to maximize their personal and intellectual potential. We are committed to excellence in teaching and student learning and the purposeful inclusion of technology. It is our mission that all students will become productive, responsible citizens in our local and global communities.
SO WHAT WILL WE BE WORKING ON THIS YEAR?
Focus Area #1: Students with Disabilities
Objective-To increase the percentage of students meeting proficiency in the Special Education subgroup by at least 5% in both HSA Algebra and HSA English.
Strategies
  • Ensure special education twilight school continues.
  • Continue utilizing HSA summer school for those students who do not pass the HSA on the first try.
  • Provide quality resources to train co-teachers.
  • Develop a unique cohort of high risk students who will take one HSA out of sequence.

Focus Area #2: Increase AP Enrollment

Objective-To increase the AP enrollment school-wide along with a specific goal of increasing minority enrollment by 10%.

Strategies

  • Introduce the data showing the disparity between minority and Caucasian students in the AP enrollment data to teachers.
  • Introduce the data showing the disparity between minority and Caucasian students in the AP enrollment data to parents.
  • Partner with Southern Maryland College Access Network to target minority juniors who should take advanced classes in their senior year.

Focus Area #3: Increase SAT Enrollment

Objective-To increase the number of all students taking the SAT aschool-wide along with a specific goal of increasing minorities taking the SAT by 10%.

Strategies

  • Introduce the data showing the disparity between Minority and Caucasian students taking the SAT to teachers.
  • Introduce the data showing the disparity between Minority and Caucasian students taking the SAT to parents.
  • Partner with Southern Maryland College Access Network to get the word out to Minority students about the importance of the SAT.
  • Increase enrollment in the SAT prep class.
